Hezrai the Carmelite was one of David’s mighty men. But what was his life, and the life of those other great and courageous warriors who followed David, really like? How did they meet him? What did they have to endure as they fled from Saul? What was it like when David became king? And when Absalom seized the throne? And when they returned to Jerusalem? Here we attempt answers to these questions. The life of Hezrai – or Hez – is a challenge for us all.

1 review for Hez – Chronicles of a Mighty Man

  1. Rebecca Hardy

I do not waste time and money on fiction. I’m more of a ‘Bah Humbug’ sort of person. But I know Brother Jonathan Cope and thought about my great-grandchildren so bought a copy of Hez to see if it was suitable as a gift. Dipped into its opening pages to see how ‘readable’ it was. Suddenly found myself looking at Chapter Seven! Hastily put it down to get on with the important side of ‘living’.

Tea time. Shall I watch ‘Coronavirus Update’ or read another couple of pages? Found I was now at Chapter Twelve! Now I remember why I don’t read fiction – it’s addictive. Put Hez out of sight under a cushion.

In short, for anyone just familiar enough with the life of David to remember names like Joab, David’s ‘Mighty Men’, Uriah the Hittite, Nabal, Jonathan, all these characters suddenly come to life almost jumping off the page. This is all the life of David, and sensitively told. Nowhere did I feel the story went beyond the facts, but many places where the background enhanced and made memorable the narrative.

Great-grandchildren look out. Hez is coming in a parcel to a room near you. Oh yes, don’t forget grandparents and great-grandparents too. At 89 I found it a very good read, even if it is fiction. ‘Bah’!
